About us

All Maps Welcome addresses the changing face of visual and performing arts research in the UK. With the growth of ‘new variant’ doctorates (the kinds of postgraduate developments described by writers such as Chris Parks at Lancaster University) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council promoting research projects that move ‘beyond text’, the PhD has become a vehicle for artists and performers to extend, even reinvent, the idea of postgraduateness in university arts subjects.

A great deal has happened in the past decade but there is still more to do. Most importantly, it remains almost impossible to understand the impact of research that is, in good part, realised through non-textual forms of communication.

The All Maps Welcome group wants to chart the planning, execution and dissemination of doctoral projects that use imagery (painting, photography, printmaking), materiality (material culture, sculpture, installation art) and performativity (music, theatre, exhibition curation) to establish new knowledge. Contributions can be submitted to info@allmapswelcome.com. Documents should be in word (.doc) or rich text format (.rtf) with images sent as individual jpegs (six images, high quality jpegs).
